I’ll admit it- I’m guilty. I looooove the loofah! I love the exfoliation, the extra oomph it adds to my scrubbing, the way my skin is so silky smooth after I polish up with one in the shower and follow it with a thick, creamy lotion. My skin just glows after using one. To clarify, I don’t use one every time I shower- I don’t want to polish my skin right off! I’d say about once a week I definitely do a full-body exfoliation to slough off dead skin and soften rough patches (especially if I’m going to be using a self-tanner which while we’re on that topic, self-tanners are the way to go. We only get one skin and I’d like mine to look good well into my elder years. You should too!).

好了,回到了丝瓜吗?

Reality? They. Are. Gross. Yep, gross. As I mentioned above, they slough off dead skin and anything else sitting on the surface of the skin. The tightly wound fibers are great for exfoliation, but they don’t easily release the waste we’ve scrubbed away with them. So as that loofah sits in our shower, and we continue to use it week after week, it continues to hold onto all of the dead skin, dirt, and build up we scrub off- including bacteria and germs. (See, I told you loofahs were gross). Every time you pick up that handy little scrubbing tool, you’re actually scrubbing dirt and germs back over your body.

EWWWWW!!

So- what now? Well, how about homemade exfoliating soap slices?! The best of both worlds combined in one! A sweet-smelling soap for a great lather, along with the extra exfoliating benefit of the loofah, in slices ideal for only a few uses. Perfection! The inspiration came from the one and only Martha Stewart (the original DIY queen), but this recipe is purely Bulk Apothecary. With our luxurious, moisturizing soap base, pure essential oils, and beautiful botanicals- you?ll never miss the days of the plain, old loofah?

Ingredients:

Steps:

  1. Cut the sea sponges into one-inch slices using a serrated bread knife and place one slice in each round soap mold (you can also use tart tins or tart dishes to make these).
  2. Chop the soap base into small cubes and melt slowly using a double boiler. You can also do a speedier version by microwaving the soap base in 30-second increments (stirring in between) until melted and smooth.
  3. Add the essential oils and flower petals last, stirring to incorporate all ingredients.
  4. Pour the soap mixture over each sponge slice, covering completely.
  5. Allow the soap to rest overnight before freeing from the molds.

Enjoy the creamy lather and exfoliation the next time you hop in the shower.

Once the soap has been used and the sponge is exposed, toss it out and reach for another!

These exfoliating soap slices are handy and so pretty!

Display them in your bathroom until you’re ready to use, they’re sure to leave your guests talking!
